Single-celled parasites that cause malaria enter the bloodstream by a female Anopheles mosquito's bite. The parasite genus found in mosquitoes that causes malaria is called Plasmodium. The parasites proliferate in the host's liver after a human is bitten by an infected mosquito before attacking and damaging red blood cells. If malaria is not identified and treated right away, it can be fatal. All it takes for someone to become ill is one mosquito bite. After being bitten by an infected mosquito for as little as seven days, malaria symptoms may start to manifest.
