Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection that can harm many organs and spread throughout the body. Without prompt treatment, it may cause serious complications or even prove fatal. It is caused by a bacterium called Salmonella typhi, which is related to those that cause salmonella food poisoning. The typhoid virus spreads quickly. Through their feces or, less frequently, their urine, an infected person can eliminate the bacteria from their body. If a person consumes food or drinks water that has been contaminated with a small amount of infected poop or pee, they may contract the bacteria and develop typhoid fever. Typhoid fever must be treated with antibiotics as soon as possible. The likelihood that typhoid fever will be mild and treatable at home with a 7–14-day course of antibiotic tablets rises with early diagnosis. Serious cases of typhoid fever usually require hospitalisation so that antibiotic injections can be administered. With prompt antibiotic treatment, the majority of patients will start to feel better within a few days, and severe complications are incredibly rare.
