Depending on the product type you are using and the problem you are facing, the treatment is administered in different ways. When it comes to using shampoos, the correct way to do so is to only use a coin-sized dollop of shampoo (no matter how long your hair is) and apply it on your scalp only. This is because the properties of the shampoo should be absorbed by your scalp and not lathered on the body of your hair for it to be truly effective. The hair’s body gets cleaned naturally while the shampoo is rinsed and you can apply a little bit there but the focus should be on the scalp. Similarly, the accompanying conditioner should be used on the body of the hair, and never the scalp. You should leave it on for a minimum of five minutes for it to absorb the required nutrients before you rinse it off. Hair oils can be applied either an hour (minimum) before you wash your hair or the night before for deep conditioning. Both methods are effective. The oil should be applied onto your scalp and not slicked all over the body of the hair. The logic is the same as the one for shampoos. It is more important for the scalp to absorb the nutrients and the roots of the hair to be nourished with them rather than the body as that is a temporary treatment. You can heat the oils before applying them, or just apply them straight from the bottle as is. Coconut oil helps your hair grow faster, almond oil and argan oil makes your hair thicker, while peppermint oil and tea tree oil help with dandruff. Use as needed. Most hair masks are meant to be applied an hour before you shampoo. They are applied onto the body of the hair and must sit there for at least an hour for it to work. Similarly, hair serums are meant to be applied after the shampoo and conditioning is done and should be applied on damp hair. You do not need to rinse a serum out.
